  • Székelyudvarhely, the 650-year old little town, lies in the eastern-southern part of the Transylvanian basin. The highest point of its boundaries is the Szarkakő (886m), which is situated to the east of the town, at 3 km, delimitating at the same time the margin of the volcanic plateau.
  • The town is situated at an altitude of 477m above the sea level. 
  • It got the rank of Municipality (town having the rights of a county) in 1968. At present it has more than 37,000 inhabitants, from which 97.41% are of Hungarian nationality, 2,12% of Romanian nationality and 0.37% of other nationalities.

  • Székelyudvarhely, one of the Municipalities of Hargita county, is the economical and cultural center of Udvarhely basin. It is situated at 52 km from Csíkszereda, at 100 km from Marosvásárhely, at 200 km from Kolozsvár,  and at 100 km from Brassó.

  • The length of the boundary-line of the Székely Udvarhely municipality is of 40 km, its area is of 4779,21 ha, from which 389,30 ha are covered by buildings, while the area covered by streets and squares is of 144,85 ha.

  • At present it is the second most populous town in the town-network of Hargita county, after Csíkszereda,  the county town. It is a point of juncture and a railway terminus.

  • The panorama of Székelyudvarhely offers the sight of the architectural calmness and roominess.

  • Székelyudvarhely is one of the oldest settlements of the Udvarhely basin. It was first mentioned under the name of Uduorhel in the Papal Register for duties in 1333, but the place already existed before.

  • Székelyudvarhely was not built and developed according to a plan, but it was formed from the gradual union of 4 smaller settlements situated on the both banks of the Nagyküküllő and of  3 villages.

  • In the course of time the rectangular shaped center and its immediate surroundings formed the “downtown”. Its center is the juncture of the three main roads and some side roads.

  • Its monuments, its historic buildings and its blocks  get entangled in the center, thus, actually the gist of the old town is condensed here, a fact that gives it a charm even today. . This colorful condensed sight catches the visitor’s admiration.

 
  • The center of the town is mostly compact with close buildings while towards the outskirts it is looser. The new and modern quarters have been added to it owing to the flat-buildings from the 1960s.
  • In the course of time in Székelyudvarhely, a relatively developed institution network has been developed. It is mentioned as School-town since its every fourth inhabitant is a student. It has 13 kindergartens, 6 primary schools, 8 high schools, 1 vocational school, 2 colleges and 4 ones with correspondence section. Its school network is being enlarged nowadays

  • The first grammar school from Székelyudvarhely was founded in 1593 while the Reformed College in 1670.
  • The educational achievements of the Culture House, People’s Theatre, Library, Research Library, Museum, Gallery, musical programs are acknowledged all over the country.
  • The most imposing building of the former Lower-Square is the Town Hall, the building of the former County Hall, which was built between 1895 and 1896 in eclectic style according to the plans of the architect Stehlo Ottó. The master builder was the chief engineer Ferenczi Endre, who immortalized many architectural styles. Useful information can be found here.
